illy is much better imo, especially for large art.

OK, I'm going to throw my two cents into this discussion:
---- Photoshop ----
Photoshop supports BOTH pixel- and vector-based illustration-techniques: All text- and shape-tools are vector-based and can be edited and altered without loss of quality or scalability. The Pen-Tool is pretty much the same as it is in Illustrator but it lacks a couple of features that come in handy when illustrating more detailed shapes. An often overlooked feature of Photoshop is the "Layer Mask", which allows vectors to be modified using non-destructive, pixel-based editing-techniques.
Layer-styles are -though pixel-based- scalable as they can be altered to fit e.g. the new dimensions of the shape.
Photoshop also offers the possibility to import Illustrator-shapes as "Smart Objects", which can -at any state- be edited again using Illustrator (all modifications are then imported back into Photoshop).
Photoshop also comes in very handy to spice up Illustrator-illustrations with additional pixel-based elements. Cp. this article on "Vector Polishing Techniques": http://www.webdesignerwall.com/tutorial … echniques/
---- Illustrator ----
Illustrator is a pure vector-based illustration program which is especially focused on adding features and tools to make the illustration-process more convenient.
Among some cool features that can help save a lot of time (e.g. "Live Trace", which has - I think- been added in CS2) the Pen-Tool is equipped with some additional features (smoothing, etc.) and the concept of swatches makes creating / altering vector-shapes a lot more convenient (you can achieve the same effect in Photoshop using a combination of the Pen-tool, brushes and layer-styles but that ends up being pixel-based).
And -as someone already mentioned- Illustrator is a bit faster / not that memory-hungry when it comes to large canvases.
Hope that clears up a couple of things...
